The Tealwood Story

Starting Out

Tealwood Senior Living started with the belief that senior adults deserved better than what the average facility had to offer. In January 1989, Tealwood Senior Living began business, leasing five established senior living communities. But we wanted to see our care philosophy make more of an impact. We needed to grow.

Growth & Building

In 1992, Tealwood took a new step. Rather than leasing properties, we participated in ownership. The following years were full of growth for us. In 1998, we took on managing a 256-resident community and then designed and developed an independent and assisted living community in 2002.

That same year, the core team behind Tealwood Senior Living established Tealwood Management. This organization allowed us to manage our own communities and manage communities owned by other companies. Today, we operate 30 of our own communities, including freestanding assisted living communities, skilled nursing centers, and larger campuses.

Around 2008, we partnered with Trident Development to co-develop 18 senior housing projects.

Shifting Focus

Over time, our focus shifted from building design and clinical services to our residents’ needs and desires. In 2008, Tealwood began a company-wide focus on wellness. Using the 7 Dimensions of Wellness as a foundation, we developed programming to foster our residents’ physical, mental, and emotional health. Today, all of our communities use this programming.

Our Partners

Tealwood Management

Tealwood Management was formed in 2003. The principals of Tealwood Senior Living established an organization that focuses on managing its own projects and obtaining management agreements with other businesses, all while affording ownership opportunities for key staff.

Tealwood Management currently manages 10 locations of its own. It has management agreements with 4 freestanding assisted living projects, 1 skilled nursing center, and 1 campus, including a skilled nursing center and an assisted living community.

Trident Development

Tealwood Senior Living combined talents with Trident Development in 2008 to develop senior housing projects. Their journey began in Sauk Center, MN, where they developed an assisted living community, opening its doors to seniors in the community that November.

Since that initial project, the joint venture has combined to develop 15 senior housing projects, 3 of which are still under construction. Trident’s strengths are its ability to secure land, develop the infrastructure, coordinate the design of the project, assist in the financing, and ultimately secure construction. The partnership looks to continue developing projects into the future.

Leonard Louis Healthcare Properties (LLHCP)

Tealwood Senior Living began its initial journey by leasing 5 nursing facilities from LLHCP in 1989. The relationship expanded in 1992 when LLHCP partnered with the Tealwood principals to acquire a 72-unit senior care community in Waite Park, MN.

Since that first senior housing project, Tealwood has partnered with LLHCP, successfully developing 15 senior communities. The LLHCP growth strategy was built on the belief that better care is provided in rural markets where friends and relatives frequently care for their loved ones. LLHCP is owned by two prominent Minneapolis attorneys, Samuel Kaplan and Ralph Strangis.

Tealwood Senior Living

In 1998, Tealwood Senior Living formed a joint venture to manage 4 campuses owned by Senior Care Communities. A major effort came in 2002 by designing and developing a 142-unit senior living campus in Eden Prairie, MN.

The uniqueness of this community was further enhanced when the Transitional Care Unit opened in 2003. The Transitional Care Unit is a 25-bed nursing facility focusing on rehabilitation services. In 2011, TWSL developed a 77-unit assisted living project near downtown Minneapolis.
